During World War II, millions of people relied on simple and affordable ingredients to prepare filling meals. Potatoes, onions, and small amounts of meat often formed the foundation of dishes that kept families and workers going through difficult times. This recipe is inspired by those practical wartime meals. Simple, honest, and comforting, it serves as a reminder that even in uncertain times, a warm meal could bring a sense of normality and hope.

Total time: 30 minutes | Cooking time: 20 minutes | Yield: 2-3 servings

INGREDIENTS

1. Potatoes - 500 g

2. Onion - 1

3. Bacon or any available meat - 150 g

4. Salt - to taste

5. Black pepper - to taste

6. Green onions - for garnish (optional)

Step By Step Cooking Process

STEP 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes. Slice the onion and dice the bacon or meat into bite-sized pieces.

STEP 2

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook until golden and slightly crisp, releasing its flavorful fat.

STEP 3

Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and lightly golden.

STEP 4

Add the potatoes. Season with salt and black pepper, then stir to combine.

STEP 5

Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender inside and golden on the outside.

STEP 6

Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve immediately.

Sometimes the simplest meals tell the greatest stories.
