The Internet is filled with all kinds of tips for cleaning fish — but few truly effective ways to remove scales easily and cleanly. And let’s be honest — this is often the most tedious and unpleasant part. Luckily, I’ve discovered a method that works beautifully for most fish. And today, I’m ready to share it with you. Let’s begin.

Total time: 7 minutes | Clean time: 5 minutes | Result: Fish ready to cook
INVENTORY
1. Wooden board - 1 pc
2. Small knife - 1 pc
3. Gloves - 1 pair
Step By Step Cleaning Process
STEP 1
Wash the fish, pat it dry if desired. Prepare your tools, your board, and your mindset. Put on your gloves — it’s time.
STEP 2
Place the fish on the board. Hold it firmly near the head with one hand. With the other, use the knife to gently lift a flap of scales near the tail fin.
STEP 3
Slide the knife beneath the lifted scales and guide it upward, separating the layer as much as possible. Then — with a swift, confident pull — remove the entire section of scales. Repeat on the other side.
STEP 4
And that’s it — your fish is ready to cook. No mess, no stress. You’ll never dread scaling fish again. And I’ll continue to find even more kitchen secrets — to share with you here, in the Gentleman Cuisine.
